Strafr Mic, step by step
Strafr Mic sits between your microphone and the apps you talk in. It cleans up your voice and passes it on through a virtual cable called Strafr In and Strafr Out. These lessons start at zero: you don’t need to know anything about audio.
12 lessons, about 32 minutes in all. The same lessons are in the app: open Guide in the sidebar and click Start this lesson, and a small panel walks you through each step on the real pages.
Set it up the first time
Install, sign in and let the setup pick your microphone. About five minutes. About 5 min.
Step 1: Run the Strafr Mic setup you downloaded from strafr.com. Leave Virtual cable (VB-CABLE) ticked: it creates the Strafr In and Strafr Out devices your apps will use. Windows asks twice for permission (once to install, once to trust the driver from VB-Audio); click Yes and Install.
Step 2: Start Strafr Mic and click Sign in with your browser. Your browser opens strafr.com with a short code. Check it matches the code in the app, then click Approve sign-in. The app signs in by itself a few seconds later.
Step 3: A short setup appears. First pick your microphone from the list and say something: the orange bar should move. If it doesn’t, pick another one; headsets are often called “Headset Microphone”.
Step 4: Next, choose a starting preset. Natural Voice is a safe choice; Gaming removes more keyboard and fan noise. You can change it any time.
Step 5: Click TEST, talk for five seconds, then click Hear it processed and Hear it raw to hear the difference. Use headphones, or you’ll hear the speakers twice.
Step 6: Check that Send the processed voice to shows Strafr In, then click FINISH.
Step 7: Strafr Mic now offers AUTO ENHANCE. Click Start, stay quiet for 3 seconds, then talk normally for 7. It sets everything for your voice and your room and lists what it changed. Click Keep it.
Good to know
- The window can be closed: Strafr Mic keeps working from the tray (the small icon next to the clock).
- Only the first sign-in on a PC needs the internet.
Use your new voice in Discord
Discord has to listen to Strafr Out instead of your microphone. About 2 min.
Step 1: In Strafr Mic, open Microphone and look at Where your voice goes. Send voice to should say Strafr In and show Sending.
In the app: Microphone
Step 2: Open Discord, click the gear next to your name at the bottom left (User Settings), then Voice & Video.
Step 3: Under Input Device, choose Strafr Out. That’s the other end of the cable: everything Strafr Mic sends into Strafr In comes out there.
Step 4: Still in Voice & Video, turn Discord’s own Noise Suppression off and switch off automatic gain control. Strafr Mic already does both, and doing them twice makes voices sound strange.
Step 5: Click Let’s Check in Discord and talk: you hear your processed voice. Done.
Good to know
- Installed VB-CABLE yourself earlier? Then the devices may still be called “CABLE Input” and “CABLE Output”. They work the same way.
- The same idea works in TeamSpeak, Zoom, Teams and every other voice app: pick Strafr Out as the microphone.
Use it in OBS or Streamlabs
Record and stream with the processed voice. About 3 min.
Step 1: In OBS, find the Sources box, click + and choose Audio Input Capture. Name it “Strafr Mic”.
Step 2: For Device, choose Strafr Out and click OK. A new meter appears in the Audio Mixer.
Step 3: If OBS also captures your real microphone (often called Mic/Aux), mute it in the mixer, or your voice is in the stream twice.
Step 4: Talk and watch the meter. If it peaks in the red, lower the input gain in Strafr Mic under Microphone.
In the app: Microphone
Good to know
- In Streamlabs the steps are the same; the source is called Audio Input Capture there too.
Use it in games
Games with voice chat need to hear Strafr Out too. About 2 min.
Step 1: Look in the game’s audio or voice settings for the microphone or input device and choose Strafr Out.
Step 2: If the game has no such setting, it uses Windows’ default microphone. Open Windows Settings, then System, Sound, and under Input choose Strafr Out.
Step 3: Set a mute key so you can go quiet fast. In Strafr Mic open Settings, then Hotkeys: Toggle mute is Ctrl+M unless you change it. It works while the game is in front.
In the app: Settings › Hotkeys
Good to know
- Games running as administrator can block the mute key. Then use the game’s own push-to-talk.
Let AUTO ENHANCE tune everything
Ten seconds and Strafr Mic sets itself up for your voice. About 1 min.
Step 1: Open the Dashboard and click AUTO ENHANCE.
In the app: Dashboard
Step 2: Click Start. Stay quiet for the first 3 seconds: Strafr Mic listens to your room (fans, PC, traffic).
Step 3: When it says Now talk normally, talk for 7 seconds the way you do in a game or a call.
Step 4: Read the result: how far your voice now stands above the background, and every setting it changed. Keep it keeps the result, Undo puts your old settings back, Keep and save as preset keeps it and saves it under a name.
Good to know
- Run it again whenever you change microphone, room or headset.
Hear how you sound to others
Record yourself and compare raw and processed. About 2 min.
Step 1: Open Mic test and choose how long to record.
In the app: Mic test
Step 2: Click Record and talk. The recording stops by itself.
Step 3: Click Play and switch between RAW and PROCESSED while it plays: it’s the same moment, so you hear exactly what Strafr Mic changes.
Step 4: The table compares the background noise, the loudest moment and the level of both versions.
Good to know
- Use headphones for this. With speakers, the microphone hears them too.
Remove background noise
Fans, keyboard clicks and hum, step by step. About 3 min.
Step 1: Open Voice chain and click Noise reduction to open it.
In the app: Voice chain
Step 2: Choose a level: LOW for a quiet room, MEDIUM for most rooms, HIGH for loud fans or a mechanical keyboard. If your voice starts to sound robotic, go one level down.
Step 3: Hear a low hum? Set Hum removal to 50 Hz (Europe) or 60 Hz (North America).
Step 4: Open Gate / expander below it. It turns the microphone down while you don’t talk. Click AUTO THRESHOLD and stay quiet for a moment: it sets the threshold for your room.
Step 5: Each step has a switch on the left to turn it off and a Bypass button to compare it quickly.
Good to know
- The meter next to each step shows what it is doing right now.
Shape your voice with the equalizer
Make it fuller, clearer or less sharp. About 4 min.
Step 1: Open Analyze, click ANALYZE VOICE and talk for 10 seconds. You see which frequencies your voice uses most.
In the app: Analyze
Step 2: Click SUGGEST EQ. A gentle starting curve appears; click APPLY to use it, or leave it.
Step 3: Open Equalizer. The blue line is your EQ, the orange shape behind it is your voice right now.
In the app: Equalizer
Step 4: Drag a point up to make that range louder, down to make it quieter. Hold Shift for small steps. Scroll on a point to make it wider or narrower.
Step 5: Double-click an empty spot to add a point; right-click a point to remove it. Rough guide: around 200 Hz is warmth, 3 to 5 kHz is clarity, above 7 kHz is hiss and S sounds.
Step 6: The High-pass removes rumble below your voice. 80 to 100 Hz suits most voices.
Good to know
- Small changes go a long way: 2 to 4 dB is plenty.
Mute and push to talk
Keys that work everywhere, even in games. About 2 min.
Step 1: Open Settings and choose Hotkeys.
In the app: Settings › Hotkeys
Step 2: Next to Toggle mute, click the key and press the key or combination you want (a mouse side button works too).
Step 3: For push to talk, set the talk mode to Push to talk and choose a key for Hold to talk. You’re muted until you hold it.
Step 4: When you’re muted, the big button turns red (MIC MUTED) and the apps get silence.
Good to know
- A short sound when muting and unmuting tells you the state without looking.
A profile for each game
Different settings switch on by themselves. About 3 min.
Step 1: Open Profiles and click New profile. It starts as a copy of your current settings.
In the app: Profiles
Step 2: Give it a name, then add the game: pick it from the running apps or type its .exe name.
Step 3: Change the settings you want for that game (any page). The profile keeps them.
Step 4: When the game starts, Strafr Mic switches to the profile, and back when it closes. Turn on Only while it's in front if it should switch only while you play.
Presets: save, share and import
Keep settings you like and use other people’s. About 2 min.
Step 1: Open Presets. The built-in ones are at the top; click one and then Load to try it.
In the app: Presets
Step 2: Like your current sound? Click Save current settings as preset and give it a name.
Step 3: To share one, select it and click Export…. Upload the .strafr-mic file in the Strafr Mic community on strafr.com.
Step 4: Downloaded a preset? Double-click the file, or click Import… on this page.
Something sounds wrong? Quick fixes
The usual problems and what to do. About 3 min.
Step 1: Nobody hears you: check the big button isn’t red (MIC MUTED), that Send voice to says Strafr In, and that the other app uses Strafr Out as its microphone.
In the app: Microphone
Step 2: The bars don’t move: Strafr Mic listens to the wrong microphone. Pick yours in the list on Microphone.
In the app: Microphone
Step 3: You sound robotic or underwater: lower Noise reduction to LOW, or turn off the other app’s own noise suppression.
In the app: Voice chain
Step 4: Too quiet or too loud: run AUTO ENHANCE again, or change Gain on Microphone.
In the app: Dashboard
Step 5: A howl or echo: you’re hearing yourself through speakers. Turn Hear yourself (monitoring) off, or use headphones.
In the app: Microphone
Step 6: Still stuck? Settings, then About, has a feedback form: describe what happens and we’ll help.
In the app: Settings › About
Still stuck?
Send feedback from the app or from your account. It goes straight to the developer. Other guides: Strafr Keyboards and Strafr Audio.
